It was just two years ago at the famed Abbey Road Studios in London that Vacheron Constantin unveiled its Fiftysix collection to the world. Since then, the line has enjoyed many iterations, but today’s release on Mr. Porter of the Fiftysix Day-Date Petrol Blue watch may be one of the most stunning unveiled this year. The retro-inspired 30-piece numbered edition is a 40mm stainless steel watch with a rich blue dial and sepia brown vintage-looking calfskin strap. Urban chic at its finest.
The deep color of the dial was developed especially for the Fifty-six collection and it suits the sector-type dial perfectly. There are three different finishes on the dial, including opaline, sunburst and snailed. Arabic numerals and gold hour markers make the dial highly legible. The Fifty-six Day-Date Petrol blue watch is powered by the manufacture-made 2475 SC/2 self-winding caliber that offers day of the week, date and 40 hours of power reserve. A tour around the dial shows that the date is visible at 3:00 on the dial, the power reserve indication is at 6:00 and the day of the week is at 9:00 — making for harmonious balance.
The movement is fitted with ceramic ball bearings to eliminate the need for lubrication and to offer more longevity. Via a transparent sapphire case back, the details and find finishings of the movement, especially the openwork 22-karat gold rotor, are visible. The oscillating weight is inspired by the shape of the Maltese cross, Vacheron Constantin’s logo. As it rotates, the main plate behind it, with Cotes de Geneve design, is also visible.
The Fifty-six collection, as its name suggests, was developed to recall the brand’s first water-resistant self-winding watch that made its debut in 1956. Available exclusively on Mr Porter, the global men’s style online destination, the new version retails for $17,400. It should be noted that Mr Porter has approximately 27 Vacheron Constantin watches on its site. However, this Fifty-six is the first one that is exclusive to Mr Porter. It is also one of most affordable of the watches, to date, with the exception of a Fiftysix Day-Date with white dial that retails for the same amount.
A close-up look at this watch reveals its sophisticated yet casual style. It is the perfect timepiece for business, boardroom and weekend wear. Of course, that is exactly what the audience of Mr Porter commands. Since its inception nearly 10 years ago, Mr Porter has become the single most important men’s style destination.
