Over the coming days, we will be posting about some of our favorite watches that were unveiled during Dubai Watch Week — a watch lover’s paradise. Earlier we covered the new Armin Strom Tribute One Fume’ and then the MB&F HM 11 Architect watch. Today we take a close look at the new Ulysse Nardin Freak One “Ops” watch.
Dubai Watch Week bore witness to Ulysse Nardin’s bold fusion of high-tech innovation and desert-inspired aesthetics with the introduction of the Freak One Ops, a 44mm khaki and black timepiece adorned with a striking camouflage motif. This latest addition to the Freak lineage not only pays homage to the brand’s groundbreaking 2001 Freak debut but also elevates the iconic concept to new, sporty dimensions.
Crafted in black Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) titanium and featuring a Carbonium® bezel, the Freak One Ops incorporates cutting-edge materials that offer exceptional strength-to-lightness properties. The Carbonium, renowned for its durability, is created through a process involving high pressure and temperatures. Notably, the use of carbon fibers sourced from aircraft wings and bodies contributes to an environmentally friendly composition, with a 40 percent lower impact compared to other carbon composites.
The heart of this horological marvel beats with the precision of the Caliber UN-240, a self-winding movement meticulously crafted in-house. Comprising 229 parts, the movement boasts a high-tech DIAMonSIL escapement, ensuring optimal performance. The distinctive flying carousel, serving as the minute hand, rotates gracefully on its axis, while the hour hand is a pointer set on a rotating disk beneath the movement. The oversized oscillator, rendered in vibrant blue silicon, adds a captivating visual element to the ensemble. To enhance legibility in various lighting conditions, the hour and minute indicators are coated in beige Super-LumiNova, emitting a green glow in low light.
Beyond its technical prowess, the Freak One Ops offers a commendable 90 hours of power reserve. The watch’s design is complemented by a choice of straps, featuring either a black or khaki green integrated rubber strap or a two-tone rubber strap in black and khaki. Impressively, these straps are crafted from 30 percent recycled rubber, aligning with Ulysse Nardin’s commitment to sustainability.
With a retail price of $66,500, the Freak One Ops not only encapsulates Ulysse Nardin’s dedication to pushing horological boundaries but also exemplifies a harmonious blend of cutting-edge technology, sustainable materials, and avant-garde design – making it a standout choice for discerning watch enthusiasts.
