As one of the world’s greatest sailing events, Vendee Globe, gets set to begin, Swiss watch brand Ulysse Nardin – Official Timekeeper of the single-crew highly dangerous race—celebrates by releasing a concept watch created using plastic pollution from the oceans. Ulysse Nardin has, in fact, regularly turned its attention to the oceans, and now is working to find solutions for the plastic that pollutes our seas. The brand has even created a dedicated research team to study the trash found in the ocean and find ways to recycle it.
Ulysse Nardin Diver Net Concept Watch Uses Recycled Fishing Nets
In October, the brand reached a milestone with the launch of the new R-STRAP — made of fishing nets. Designed to be used for several of its collections, including the Diver, Marine and Freak X, it is made entirely from recycled fishing nets. Now, the brand releases the Diver Net concept watch wherein the trim of the watch is created using upcycled materials. The case is made from recycled fishing nets and the design on the bezel is also made from fishing nets.
In fact, Ulysse Nardin turned to Fil & Fab (founded by three designers who created the first fishing net recycle sector in France), which recovers nets no longer in use and transforms them into polyamide pellets. The pellets are highly resistant to friction and can be used by different companies for a host of purposes. Ulysse Nardin turned to this materials for the trim elements of the Diver Net bezel and for the case.
Ulysse Nardin Diver Net Concept Watch Uses Ceramic Glass
Going several steps further, the brand replaces the sapphire glass with a transparent ceramic glass that is made in the Jura Mountains. The ceramic glass has a lower environmental impact because the energy used in its manufacture is limited. Additionally, Ulysse Nardin equips the watch with its newest strap – made entirely from PET plastic that is transformed into reels of thread by Swiss band TIDE. The concept Diver Net watch explores ideas and ways that Ulysse Nardin can be more environmentally friendly.
The 44mm watch is powered by Ulysse Nardin’s UN-118 movement that is visible though the transparent ceramic case back. The hour markers and hands feature an acid green Super-LumiNova for easy reading underwater or in the dark. The green color (referencing nature) is carried over onto the dial, bezel, crown protector and strap stitching. Because this is a concept watch and is not in serial production (yet), there is no specified price.
