In a bold move that once again witnesses watch brands stepping outside of their watchmaking comfort zones, German brand Tutima joins forces with Los Angeles-based men’s shoe and accessories designer George Esquivel. Together, the two companies are launching the Compass line of men’s accessories, including travel duffle bag, watch roll and boots, as well as a limited edition Patria watch. The alignment of these two brands — Tutima, which is all about precision, adventure and daring to be different and Esquivel, also all about adventure and travel – is a unique match that makes for an intriguing special edition.
The family owned Tutima Glashütte, in business for almost 100 years, holds the same quality craftsmanship values as George Esquivel, who crafted his first pair of shoes almost 20 years ago and whose first self-purchase timepiece many years ago happened to be a Tutima. Both companies also share a passion for travel, experiences and a respect of time.
The top-quality Compass line is specially created and co-branded. It also marks the very rare occasion wherein the watch and accessories are being sold together as a set. In fact, this series is being sold as a six-piece set and just 25 set will be made – attesting to the rarity of the items.
The watch features a 43mm case from Tutima’s Patria line whose coveted clean and sophisticated aesthetic pairs perfectly with the George Esquivel aesthetic. Powered by the manually wound Caliber 619 movement with 65 hours of power reserve and a dual time function perfect for travelers, the watch is crafted in stainless steel.
The finely finished movement is visible via the transparent sapphire case back that also showcases a specially created oscillating weight detailed by hand in Glashütte. The bespoke timepiece boasts a striking opaline white/silver hand-finished sunburst dial with solid 18-karat rose gold hands. It is offered with two NATO straps: a single dark leather strap and a double burnt-camel-colored strap. Accompanying the watch and straps is a specially finished leather travel watch pouch.
As if the watch, straps and pouch were not enough, the entire set includes a hand-crafted, meticulously finished pair of Esquivel Zipper Chelsea Boots– a much sought-after item thanks to the superb artisanry that goes into the 100-step boot making process. The specially made Compass boots boast hand stitching, special linings and soles and hand-stained leather created using a special technique that offers a unique patina to each pair. Additionally, a Tutima x Esquivel Leather Overnight Duffle bag made of the same incredibly supple and uniquely finished natural leather vachetta completes the ensemble.
Each piece in the set is co-branded and the logo is a compass that embraces the concept of adventure and travel. That compass logo is etched by hand on the leather goods, as well as on the case back of the Tutima Patrial Dual Time watch. Each of the 25 sets is available immediately at the Esquivel stores, at select Tutima retailer partners, and online at both Esquivel and at Tutima USA. Each set retails for $16,900.
According to Gustavo Calzadilla, President and CEO of Tutima USA, “When we learned of George’s passion for watch collecting and his personal experience with Tutima, we knew he would be the perfect partner to collaborate with. It was important we create a collection that perfectly represents the value of fine craftsmanship instilled in both Tutima and Esquivel and we found the same dedicated effort and attention to detail in his journey of creation as we have at Tutima.”
