Both the Couture Show and CoutureTime show in Las Vegas are in full swing now, and we are seeing some fun and exciting timepieces. One brand that we are especially excited about this year is Chronoswiss. A brand we have known almost from its inception in 1983 by Gerd R. Lang, whose dream was to make extraordinary mechanical timepieces, Chronoswiss is enjoying a relaunch of sorts, as it is now under new ownership. As such, we are seeing a spate of interesting new timepieces from the brand that boast great architecture and top-notch Swiss craftsmanship. Of particularly note is the Flying Regulator Open Gear watch.
The Chronoswiss Flying Regulator Open Gear watch, offered in either 18-karat 5N rose gold, stainless steel or black stainless steel, features off-center hours at 12:00, seconds at 6:00 and central minutes hand. Each version is created in a limited edition.
With a three-dimensional dial that allows for viewing of the key movement parts, the Chronoswiss Regulator Open Gear watch recalls the first — and truly signature — model in the history of Chronoswiss. This year, as the brand celebrates its 35th anniversary, it focuses on the regulator, with a host of new models that are at once modern yet timeless. The watch dial is the main plate, with the elaborately skeletonized train wheel bridges and skeletonized gears mounted on it. Also visible are the ruby bearings on which the wheel bridges rest, and six blued screws.
Chronoswiss Flying Regulator Open Gear 41mm watch retails for just about $6,500.
The watch offers hour indication on the sundial at 12:00, an open-worked small seconds hand at 6:00 and the minutes on a large outer track of the dial. The seconds wheel is designed to resemble a rotary dial and to draw the eye inward. There are four different color variations of this watch, and a special anniversary piece. For better readability, the watch features Super-LumiNova inlays on the hands and indices. Designed by Chronoswiss, the watch dial features 37 individual parts made totally in house in the brand’s Lucerne workshops. The Chronoswiss Flying Grand Regulator Skeleton — depending on the model — houses one of several mechanical movements made in-house, and retails for about $6,500 to $8,700 in stainless steel. This watch is truly beautiful and one needs to see it up close and personal to really get the feel for it. Be warned, though: It could be love at first sight.
