Don’t wait. Once word gets out about the newest IWC Spitfire editions of the Big Pilot’s watches 43mm in titanium and bronze, there will be a rush to the purchase. Why? Because the look, especially of the bronze one, is killer. Oh, and so are the prices. Inspired by the functional design of the historic military (mil-spec) watches launched by IWC decades ago, the new automatic pieces offer bold yet highly legible form and function.
The bronze watch is easily my favorite, not just because I love a good bronze watch, but also because the combination of bronze case with military green dial and strap is just head-turning. The Big Pilot’s Watch 43 Spitfire (Ref. IW329702) is crafted in a matte-finished bronze that is made using aluminum and iron, as well, ensuring an alloy that is 50 percent harder than standard bronze.
The green dial boasts Arabic numerals in Super-LumiNova and bronze-colored markers at the four key numerals. The hands are also coated in Super-LumiNova. A hand-stitched strap in matching military green completes the look, and the titanium case back is engraved with the Spitfire airplane. Naturally, a soft-iron inner case protects the watch against magnetic fields. This must-have piece retails for $9,350.
The second new timepiece, also with a soft iron inner case for anti-magnetism and with the Spitfire engraved on the case back, s is crafted in brushed titanium and boasts a black dial. The dial features an outer minute track, along with Arabic numerals every five minutes and a gold-hued triangle at 12:00. Instead of Arabic numeral at 15, 30 and 45 minutes, there is a matching gold-hued marker. The hours are indicated on a smaller center dial. The look of this watch is incredibly vintage thanks to the numerals and inner dial. It is paired with a rich brown leather hand-stitched strap and sells for $8,950.
Both watches are powered by the IWC 82100 caliber with Pellaton winding system developed for the brand by Albert Pellaton, IWC technical director, in the 1950’s. The wa tches boast 60 hours of power reserve and can be registered under the My IWC Care program to receive a six-year extension to the two-year international warranty.
