In a big move during LVMH Watch Days in Miami, TAG Heuer unveils two incredible new Carrera Chronograph watches that pay homage to the collection’s rich history but in a modern manner. Meet the Carrera Chronograph with date at 9:00 – inspired by the legendary Carrera Dato — and the Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon. Both are offered in green (a teal-shaded green) that has its own important history in motorsports, and both boast the 2023 Glassbox design that was unveiled last year to celebrate the line’s 60th anniversary.
To understand the significance of the Carrera collection, we need to revisit 1963, when the collection made its debut. The brainchild of Jack Heuer, the series was inspired by automobile racing and so was devoid of a date indication. Three years later, a date was added at 12:00 – giving rise to the first Dato design. A significant transformation occurred in 1968 as the date window relocated to the nine o’clock position, marking the emergence of the now-iconic Dato layout.
That Carrera Dato watch became highly desirable thanks to its legibility and the fact that it was presented with a stark black and white dial. Additionally, it was ahead of its time when it came to performance and precision – offering a stopwatch, shock absorbers and more. The date at 9:00 – opposite the singe subsidiary dial for tracking time to 1/5th of a second – became legendary. A Re-edition in 2021 put the watch back into the minds of collectors.
Now, the new Carrera Chronograph in green is a deft blend of heritage and modernity thanks to aesthetic enhancements such as improved ergonomics, a curved flange, and a dial with circular brushed finishing. Crafted from steel, the watch showcases rhodium-plated indexes and hands, complemented by a teal green azuré mono sub-dial at 3:00.
Additionally, there are technical enhancements to the 39mm watch, including the domed sapphire Glassbox crystal recalling the designs from the 1970’s but with a curve over the flange. The open caseback reveals TAG Heuer’s in-house movement, the Caliber TH20-07 automatic that offers hours, minutes, seconds, date and chronograph with single minute counter at 3:00. The teal green flange offers 60 second/minute scale. It is water resistant to 100 meters. It retails for $6,550.
As if this heritage-inspired watch isn’t enough – TAG Heuer kicks things up a significant notch by also releasing the Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon in the same elegant teal green for the circular brushed dial. The tourbillon escapement is visible at 6:00 on the dial. The Heuer 02 – TH20-09 movement that offers hours, minutes, seconds, chronograph and tourbillon escapement. It features three counters on its dial. The 42mm watch is crafted in stainless steel with a screw-down sapphire caseback. It retails for $24,050.
