I’ve long been a fan of Zodiac. With its interesting watchmaking history that dates to 1882, Swiss provenance, and great timepiece designs at amazing prices, what’s not to love? So I was intrigued when I learned that this Biel-Bienne-based watch company had just teamed up with avant-garde American clothing brand Rowing Blazers to produce a limited edition Harry’s Bar Super Sea Wolf timepiece. I’ll sort out all the details of this multi-layered collaboration, but first the watch.
Rowing Blazers x Zodiac Harry’s Bar Super Sea Wolf
This limited edition comprises just 282 Zodiac Super Sea Wolf-inspired timepieces, whose eye-catching co-branded “bottle green” dials are decorated with the famous Paris-based Harry’s New York Bar “bar flies” logo. The hour indices are treated with luminescent material, as are the hour, minute and seconds hands. The date window is at 3 o’clock.
Inside, the STP 1-11 automatic movement, which has been in production since 2008, beats at 28800vph and has a power reserve of 44 hours. The STP 1-11 is a mainstay among Zodiac watches and has been used throughout the company’s collections.
The 40mm stainless steel case has a polished black bezel with Arabic numerals; it is water resistant to 20 ATM. Zodiac’s classic 5-link stainless steel bracelet is attractive and comfortable, and a French military-style Swiss-made #tide strap made from 100% recycled plastic is an added bonus.
Rowing Blazers
Founded by Jack Carlson in New York City in 2017, Rowing Blazers is known for its preppy-meets-punk style of jackets, shirts and more. GQ probably said it best, calling it “The brand that’s saving prep by kicking down its walls.”
So what’s the Harry’s New York Bar connection?
Carlson, who also serves as creative director for the cult brand, is a proud member of Harry’s own secret society, the International Bar Flies (or I.B.F.). As such, he wanted to commemorate his favorite watering hole with a timepiece from a favorite watch brand.
“Harry’s New York Bar is everything we aspire to be at Rowing Blazers: inclusive and unassuming, charmingly ridiculous, but with a hint of old-world glamour and a deep appreciation for history—all while remaining inventive, creative, and innovative.”
A bit of history: Harry’s New York Bar has been a destination for distinguished expats and international celebrities since 1911 and is considered the oldest cocktail bar in Europe. It was a favorite stop for such luminaries as Ernest Hemingway, Coco Chanel, Morgan Freeman, and Daft Punk, and film fans will remember that James Bond famously visited it in a scene in Ian Fleming’s from A View to a Kill. But Harry’s is also known as the illustrious birthplace of the Bloody Mary and the Sidecar, as well as a host of other well-known drinks.
The Rowing Blazers x Zodiac Harry’s Bar Super Sea Wolf is available online and in select stores, including the Rowing Blazers flagship store in New York City. It is priced at $1,595…no adult beverages included.
