Oris is a brand we write about often here for several reasons. To begin with, the watches are very well made in terms of both technical and aesthetic design. It also offers phenomenal quality to value ratios. Additionally, this Swiss brand — founded in 1904 — is independently owned (and operated by some very nice people, I might add). Lastly, and maybe even more importantly is the fact that Oris cares. This brand is regularly supporting causes on grassroots and global levels. Sustainability is important to the brand, as is conservation and health. That may well be why the brand is also a supporter of the Movember campaign for better men’s health and awareness. This year, Oris teams up with New York Yankee’s Manager Aaron Boone and releases a new Oris Movember Special Edition ChronOris watch.
Oris And The Movember Cause
“As an independent Swiss watch company, Oris has the freedom to go its own way and to choose projects we consider not just important, but urgent,” says Rolf Studer, Oris Joint Executive Officer. “One of those is men’s health, which is why we’re working with Movember, a charity working to stop men dying too young.”
The brand teams with Aaron Boone, manager of the Yankees, who believes that community and awareness play a pivotal role in success. The hope is to get the New York Yankees community, the Oris community and others globally to pay attention, to raise awareness, to get checked and to listen and respond to friends and loved ones.
In reality, the numbers are depressing and — as with all health issues — we can’t just sweep them under the table and hope no one notices. “Experts calculate that prostate cancer rates will double in the next 15 years, while testicular cancer rates have doubled in the last 50. Each year, more than 500,000 men die by suicide around the world, meaning men account for three quarters of all suicides. Globally, suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15 to 29-year-old men.”
Since its founding in 2003, Movember has supported more than 1,250 projects around the world that address these issues. This is the third year that Oris supports the cause and has become an important partner is spreading awareness and raising funds.
Oris Movember Special Edition ChronOris Watch
Big, bold and decidedly vintage inspired, the stainless steel watch measures 39mm in diameter and features a black dial with rose gold-plated hour and minute hands and bright orange seconds hand. Thanks to Super-LumiNova(R) hands, the watch is easily readable in the dark. Additionally the domed sapphire crystal is anti-reflective on both sides to avoid glare.
It is also packed with useful functions above and beyond hours, minutes, and seconds. The Movember Special Edition Chronoris watch offers a date window at 3:00, instantaneous date change and date corrector, as well as stop-second function. The automatic caliber endows the timepiece with 38 hours of power reserve. The caseback of the watch is engraved with Oris Movember Edition. It is sold in a set with a travel pouch and an extra NATO fabric strap. The watch retails for $2,000 on leather strap and $2,200 on steel bracelet. With a portion of the proceeds going to Movember.
