Well it has been quite a week — with so many announcements of new smart watches. In fact, when we planned this week to be our Smart Watch Week, we had no idea that it would all unfold before our eyes. Yet, here we are — marking the unveiling of Montblanc’s full foray into Smart watches with the aptly named Montblanc Summit collection. Today, we want you to meet the Montblanc Summit smart watch with Google, Android Wear 2.0 OS, ands apps from Uber and Foursquare, among others.
Those of you who have been following the smart watch evolution and Montblanc will recall that two years ago the brand unveiled the e-Strap, a smart strap that could be interchanged with the regular strap on certain watches. Well the brand has come a long way since then. For those old enough to remember the old Dick Tracey cartoons, where he talks into the watch … that time has come.
Today, Montblanc unveils its first smart watch, Montblanc Summit, in cooperation with Google introducing the brand’s fine watchmaking codes to the connected watch world and marking a new era in luxury wearables for men. The Montblanc Summit utilizes Google’s Android Wear™ 2.0 operating system for smartwatches, and the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ Wear 2100 processor. The performance of the processor makes it possible for users to move seamlessly from one application to the next, personalize the look, and work with Google Assistant. The
Qualcomm Technologies’ Snapdragon chipset offers a full day of battery life when the smart watch is in use.
The Looks of the Montblanc Summit
To inspire a younger generation to buy Montblanc, the brand turned to the beloved vintage look of watches that is so appealing to millennials. As such, it uses the 1858 case as the inspiration for the 46mm watch, and vintage-inspired dial designs from the traditional watch are used for the “watch” dial look of the smart watch. Of course, Montblanc is offering customization of dials, as well.
The high-contrast and 1.39” large round AMOLED display is designed to offer bold color and shapes, made even more readable by the curved sapphire crystal. Each Montblanc Summit watch has a water-resistant standard of IP68 making it resilient to the splashes of everyday life. There is a built-in microphone for voice commands and sensors, which include a heart-rate monitor, activities measurer, gyroscope and compass, barometer and more. The watch can be charged via micro USB on a magnetic Montblanc dock. It connects via Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® and features 4GB Flash storage that can be used to sync and play music without the need of a smartphone.
Montblanc Summit Fitness Tracking and More
On the back of the Montblanc Summit is a mechanical protrusion for the integrated heart-rate monitor. All of the other fitness related tracking one can expect from Android Wear 2.0 is also offered, along with a collaboration with Runtastic that gives a free 3-month premium account pre-loaded into each watch. Additionally, the daily fitness progress is displayed in the shape of a summit — how apropos.
The Google play Music app allows the synchronization of music into the Montblanc Summit’s internal memory so the music plays directly into the Bluetooth headphones during exercise, without the need to take a phone along for a run. As mentioned, the Montblanc Summit has Google Assistant built into it and it works interactively with the watch’s microphone so the wearer can access all sorts of information and can even use it for voice messages. It also works great with the Summit’s voice activated translator. The watch also offers apps for Uber and Foursquare and even boarding pass bar codes can be displayed on the Summit.
Customization of the Montblanc Summit
Like another big brand announced this week, customization is king, and the Montblanc Summit’s 46mm case comes in a choice of four different materials, including black PVD coated stainless steel, a bi-colour stainless steel case with a black PVD coated stainless steel bezel, stainless steel case with satin finish and a grade 5 titanium case also with satin finish.
Classic and sporty watch face choices are offered and the wearer can design his or her own dial look. He or she can also choose from complications that include date, small seconds and chronographs. Starting for 15,000 Euro, truly discerning customers can even design their own personalized dial with Montblanc’s creative team. There is a choice of eight straps and bracelets that range from NATO rubber to calfskin or alligator straps — all of which can be easily changed thanks to a spring bar design. In total, Montblanc Summit offers more than 300 different wearable combinations.
Price and Availability of the Montblanc Summit
The Montblanc Summit watches well be sold beginning in May, with a starting retail of about $950. The online retailer for men’s style, Mr. Porter, will be the exclusive retailer for the first two weeks of the global launch.
