As lovers of all things horology, we here at ATimelyPerspective welcome independent brands into the market place. One interesting such brand is Frank Dubarry, who presented his new Dubarry Crazy Wheel collection earlier this year at Baselworld. The new line from this young brand offers a unique interpretation of the hours and minutes’ display, as well as other genre-defining characteristics. Not too surprising, considering the brand is the brainchild of the man who first invented TechnoMarine many years ago.
Indeed, Frank Dubarry’s creativity and horological success goes back more than a couple of decades. He was the leader behind the highly successful TechnoMarine line in the 1990’s and early 2000’s, until he sold the brand in 2006. Then, in 2014, he returned to the watch industry – creating his own eponymous brand that launched officially in 2015.
The Dubarry Crazy Wheel collection may be one of the more ingenious of the brand’s various lines. As the name suggests, the Crazy Wheel is a tribute to the built-in sub counter that revolves around the dial. The hours are displayed on a counter that remains attached to the minute hand. The display is carried out by a bridge that rotates through 360 degrees around the minute markers. To finish, the dial displays a 31-day simple date via a display window at the 3 o’clock position.
The reverse side of the watch features the brand’s emblem, the Homo Tempus, which is the sculpture of an active man with arms and legs outstretched. For Frank Dubarry the figure is emblematic of the person who manages his or her time with technology, who devours time in order to leave a mark on it, and who juggles both professional and personal lives accordingly.
The line has some visual interest, especially thanks to the orbiting disc and other styling elements found in the dial. On each watch, the moving sub-counter is created in a bold color, and there are six different color options. While the watches are created in a titanium case with forged carbon bezel and colorful accents, the Maori Tattoo edition features a totally engraved case inspired by Maori culture. The case is elaborately finished with tattoos endemic to the people, and really makes an impression both in photos and on the wrist.
