Not too long ago, Floyd Mayweather made headlines buying an $18 million diamond bedecked watch from Jacob & Co. Here we take a closer look at that watch. The article below was written by Roberta Naas and first appeared on her Perfect Timing column on Forbes.com.
“It is no secret that former professional boxer Floyd Mayweather loves bling. He even writes about his jewelry purchases on Instagram. That is where many learned of his most recent purchase: Jacob & Co.’s $18 million Billionaire diamond tourbillon watch. First introduced to the world in 2015 by Jacob & Co. at that year’s Baselworld Show, the Billionaire timepiece is a one-of-a-kind watch that Jacob Arabo created in affiliation with Flavio Briatore and his Billionaire Lifestyle SARL company. An exceptionally extravagant timepiece, the Billionaire is set with a massive 260 carats of emerald-cut diamonds. The bold cut enhances the brilliance of the diamonds, which are set in an inverted pyramid style. The entire 18-karat white gold case and bracelet of the watch is diamond-set with stones that weigh as many as 3 carats each.
The Billionaire watch features a rectangular case and dial with a skeletonized movement equipped with a tourbillon escapement that is constantly in motion when on the wrist. The tourbillon compensates for errors in timekeeping due to the effects of gravity when the watch is in certain positions on the wrist. The JCAM09 caliber consists of 167 components and offers 72 hours of power reserve. Mayweather regularly posts images on Instagram of his favorite watches – and they demonstrate his love of diamonds. Prior to showing off the Billionaire watch yesterday, in May showcased on instagram a Patek Philippe 18-karat gold watch – noting that he had the timepiece customized after market – the entire bracelet except for center links in 18-karat rose gold is bedecked in diamond brilliants. The Jacob & Co. Billionaire watch that Mayweather purchased is unique, although Arabo (founder of Jacob & Co.) said he would make other watches similar to it using different stones. At this year’s Baselworld, he introduced the Millionnaire watch – similar in look but entirely set with 260 carats of yellow diamonds.’
