Art and watch lovers take note. Today is the last day you will be able to catch Breguet at the Frieze New York contemporary art show that has been open to the public at The Shed in Hudson Yards since May 18 and that concludes today. The result of a partnership between Breguet and Frieze that began last year, Breguet’s presence at the show is undeniably alluring, as the brand casts a new light on the concept of time and emotions.
For Frieze 2023 fairs around the globe, Breguet hosts its own lounge and this year displays commissioned artworks curated by Somi Sim. Sim, an independent curator, was inspired by the Breguet Manufacture, which she visited to get a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Breguet timepieces. Her theme for Frieze New York: “Orbital Time.”
She has selected creations by international artists and installed two bespoke exhibits, one each by Rags Media Collective and Ann Lislegaard. The Rags Media Collective presents “I fall in love out of orbit” showcases nine clocks set to local time zones of other Frieze host cities and mythical cities like Atlantis. Instead of numbers on each clock, words of emotions, such as anxiety, guilt, awe, are written. It gives a new perspective to time when the hands of the clock land on combinations of words such as indifference and panic.
For the Lislegaard exhibit, Sim built a small booth within the lounge so the video could play in the dark and quiet space. The video, entitled “oracles, owls … Some animals Never Sleep,” showcases a tired and somewhat confused digital owl and is a juxtaposition of the normal way of thinking of an owl: wise. It is a bit jarring, but it does the trick: visitors are suddenly thinking differently. The video also draws a connection between the digital and real worlds.
In addition to the art, Breguet naturally has some of its finest watches on display, as well as a watchmaker and artisans present, demonstrating the making of watch movement, and the fine artistic elements that go along with it, including guilloche, engraving, and other arts.
Breguet’s lounge at The Shed is on the 8th floor and is open to the public. As mentioned, today is the last day of the fair, but fear not, Frieze Seoul is in September and Frieze London is in October of this year. You can catch Breguet at one of those fairs and find new art curations by Some Sim.
