This month, from June 22 to 25, Los Angeles will play host to The Golden Ratio Musical Show, a captivating four-day event celebrating the arithmetical equation that defines beauty. Presented by Jaeger-LeCoultre, the show combines mesmerizing sound and light installations to immerse visitors in the aesthetic harmony of the Golden Ratio — a succinct number that represents the ultimate proportions and that was a guiding factor in the creation of the brand’s famed Reverso. The show features an original symphony composed by the ground-breaking British musician TØKIO M¥ERS.
The Golden Ratio, also known as Phi (φ), is a mathematical formula that is deeply ingrained in the natural world and has long been associated with beauty and aesthetic appeal. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s unique event aims to explore the links between design, watchmaking, and the Golden Ratio through the iconic Reverso watch, renowned as a symbol of 20th-century design.
Taking place at the specially designed 1931 Cinema, located in the open-air setting of Westfield Century City on Santa Monica Boulevard, the event pays homage to the Art Deco period, during which the Reverso was created. The concept also draws inspiration from the world’s first drive-in movie theater, which opened in 1933 and had a profound impact on American popular culture.
At the heart of the 1931 Cinema lies The Golden Ratio Musical Show, a display of sound and light that is projected onto a massive screen of falling water. This ten-minute production tells the story of the Golden Ratio in four chapters, tracing its origins from observations of nature to the scientific examination of beauty’s mystical properties and its profound influence on cultural history, architecture, and art. The show culminates with the presentation of the Reverso, eloquently expressing the spirit of the Golden Ratio.
The Commissioned Work of TØKIO M¥ERS For Jaeger-LeCoultre
The commissioned soundtrack for The Golden Ratio Musical Show is composed by British musician and composer TØKIO M¥ERS, who has gained global recognition for his innovative fusion of classical music with cinematic, hip-hop, dance, and ’90s soul influences. A graduate of the Royal College of Music, TØKIO M¥ERS is celebrated for his immense range and dynamic power as a performer and is known for pushing the boundaries of classical music.
Inspired by his time spent at the Jaeger-LeCoultre Manufacture in the Swiss Jura Mountains, TØKIO M¥ERS crafted the soundtrack with the intention of enhancing the emotional impact of the digital projections. Describing it as a “short symphony in four chapters,” he incorporates the Golden Ratio into the music by translating the number 1.618 into a tempo of 161.8 beats per minute, creating a captivating rhythm that complements the visual experience.
The Golden Ratio Musical Show will make its debut in Los Angeles after its successful premiere in Shanghai. The event will commence with an invitation-only gala on June 22, featuring a live performance by TØKIO M¥ERS accompanied by the acclaimed L.E.Orchband, a collective of world-class musicians from leading orchestras in the United States and Europe. Following the gala, TØKIO M¥ERS will perform a concert showcasing his other works, accompanied by signature lighting that adds to the dynamism of his solo performances.
