IWC Schaffhausen has unveiled an exciting new addition to its Ingenieur collection — one many collectors have been asking for. Meet the Ingenieur Automatic 40 with a striking blue dial. This latest iteration reflects the bold, timeless aesthetic codes of Gérald Genta’s Ingenieur SL from the 1970’s, while meeting modern demands for ergonomics, wearability, and cutting-edge movement technology.
The Ingenieur’s journey began in 1955, when it made its debut as IWC’s first antimagnetic wristwatch designed for civilian use. It wasn’t until the 1970s, however, that the Ingenieur truly achieved iconic status. That was when renowned Geneva-based designer Gérald Genta reimagined the timepiece, creating the Ingenieur SL (Reference 1832)—a revolutionary stainless steel luxury sports watch featuring an integrated bracelet. This fusion of technical innovation and avant-garde design cemented its place in horological history.
The new Ingenieur Automatic 40 builds on Genta’s vision, bringing his design ethos to the 21st century. It is part of the Ingenieur Automatic 40 series that was revived by the brand in 2023 and that consisted of titanium and stainless steel versions with black, silver-plated, and aqua dials. Now, the addition of a blue dial adds a fresh yet classic touch to the collection.
The new Ingenieur Automatic 40 (Ref. IW328907) boasts a stainless steel case, bezel, and integrated H-link bracelet with a butterfly folding clasp. The 40-millimeter case strikes the perfect balance between boldness and wearability, while the ergonomics of the bracelet have been meticulously refined for a flawless fit, even on slender wrists.
The hallmark of the Ingenieur design—the bezel with five polygonal screws—adds a distinctive industrial aesthetic, while the mix of polished and satin-finished surfaces enhances its luxurious appeal. Complementing the structural elegance is the watch’s stunning blue dial, which features a unique “grid” pattern stamped onto a soft iron base. A PVD coating ensures the vivid hue retains its brilliance over time. Rhodium-plated baton hands and applied markers, filled with Super-LumiNova®, provide excellent legibility in all lighting conditions.
At the heart of the Ingenieur Automatic 40 is the IWC-manufactured 32111 caliber. This automatic movement is equipped with an efficient double pawl winding system that transforms the kinetic energy from the wearer’s movements into an impressive 120-hour power reserve. This five-day autonomy ensures reliability for extended periods of non-use—a perfect blend of practicality and precision.
The Ingenieur’s technical heritage is further honored by the inclusion of a soft-iron inner case, which shields the movement from magnetic fields, preserving its accuracy. Such innovations underscore IWC’s commitment to both performance and durability. It retails for $11,700.
