At Watches and Wonders Geneva, IWC Schaffhausen introduces a special edition of the Ingenieur Automatic 40, directly inspired by the timepiece worn by Brad Pitt’s character, Sonny Hayes, in the highly anticipated Apple Original film F1® The Movie. Limited to 1000 pieces, the watch captures the adrenaline-fueled spirit of Formula One™ with its striking green grid-patterned dial—a nod to the fictional racing driver’s signature color.

The F1® The Movie, directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, Lewis Hamilton, and Brad Pitt, is set to hit theaters on June 27, 2025. With scenes filmed during real Grand Prix™ races and featuring genuine F1 cars, the movie aims to deliver an unprecedented cinematic experience. Pitt stars as Sonny Hayes, a veteran driver making a dramatic return to Formula One™, alongside Damson Idris, who plays his rookie teammate on the fictional APX GP team.

Just 1,000 pieces of the Ingenieur Automatic 40 will be made
For the movie, Brad Pitt, playing Sonny Hayes, wears the specially made IWC Ingenieur SL based on the SL “Jumbo” SL Automatic (Ref. 1832) from 1976 – the watch designed by famed Gerald Genta. The watch seen in the movie features a green dial created in collaboration with Cloister Watch Company, a design studio specializing in bespoke vintage timepieces.
Additionally, IWC is one of the sponsors in the movie of the fictional F1 team APXGP, and the brand provides watches for all of the team members (drivers, mechanics, etc.), so the brand has a significant presence.

Meanwhile, that movie watch served as the inspiration for the new IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 (Ref. IW328908). Made in a limited edition of just 1000 pieces — the new watch retains the hallmark design codes of the Ingenieur collection, including the distinctive “Grid”-patterned dial, a signature of the Gérald Genta-designed Ingenieur SL from the 1970s. The green dial is complemented by gold-plated hands and appliques, filled with Super-LumiNova® for optimal legibility.

The stainless steel case measures 40 mm in diameter and features the characteristic bezel secured by five functional screws. Its integrated stainless steel bracelet, equipped with a butterfly folding clasp, ensures a seamless fit on the wrist.
Beneath the bold exterior lies the IWC-manufactured 32111 caliber, offering an impressive 120-hour power reserve. The movement is protected by a soft-iron inner case, shielding it from magnetic fields—a nod to the Ingenieur’s legacy of robust engineering. The watch is water-resistant to 10 bar, making it as functional as it is stylish.
