It doesn’t surprise us that the newest timepiece out in 2021 from independent brand Urwerk is something to roar about. The UR-100v T-Rex watch is crafted in bronze with a special textured and burnished finish that replicates the scales of the giant 12-foot-tall Tyrannosaurus rex dinosaur. However, to ensure it doesn’t pre-date itself, Urwerk equips the watch with its signature satellite hours movement with a new self-winding system — for a decidedly bold and daring look inside and out.
Urwerk UR-100V T-Rex Case and Functions
Like the dinosaurs that became extinct, this model may fast disappear, as the brand is making just 22 pieces. The solid bronze case is treated in three successive processes that result in an incredible patina. The bronze is shaped for the case then computer milled to create the carved scales on its top and sides. Lastly, the case is sand blasted and finished using Urwerk’s proprietary biochemical burnishing process. The distinctive color and pattern is unique to this watch. A PVD black titanium case back offers a smooth-against-the-skin feel.
The 41mm UR-100V T-Rex features the immediately identifiable satellite wandering hours that are powered by a new self-winding system developed in house by Urwerk. Three satellites, each with four hours indicated on it, rotate on a three-armed carousel. In turn, each satellite rotates to display the correct hour. A red pointer indicates the minutes on a 60-minute scale. Once the red pointer of the satellite hours completes each 60-minute journey, it displays the distance traveled by planet Earth in its orbit around the sun. The hours and minutes are painted with Super-LumiNova coating.
The watch, wound by the rotor that is powered by the movement of the wrist, is coupled to a device Urwerk calls the Windfänger — a planetary gear that limits the action of the rotor to avoid overwinding. This device is specific to the UR-100 models, such as last year’s UR -100 SpaceTime watch. Chocked inside and out with innovation, the UR-100V T-Rex watch brings together centuries of the past, the present and the future.
