Today marks the unveiling of the first automatic caliber developed by Panerai with a 10-day power reserve. Meet the P.2003 movement – housed in the new Luminor Diece Giorni GMT timepiece, PAM01482 with rich blue dial and the line’s distinctive crown protector.
The alluring new watch is a deft blend of Panerai’s rich history and its dedication to function and precision. Part of the Luminor Complicazioni collection, the new timepiece showcases the brand’s commitment to top watchmaking prowess. A tour around the sandwich-style dial is a resolute tour of elegance and sporty appeal.
The watch, with rich midnight blue sunburst dial, boasts a date indication at 3:00 harmoniously balanced with a small seconds hand and an am/pm indicator at 9:00. In the center above the 6:00 mark is a linear indication of the 10-day power reserve. Red-tipped arrow hands showcase the GMT function and the day/night indication. Naturally, all numerals, markers and hands are coated with highly luminescent Super-LumiNova for practicality and complementary aesthetics.
While the outside of this 44mm cushion-shaped polished stainless steel watch case and bezel is aesthetically alluring, it is the inside that is a tribute to the brand’s watchmaking DNA. The new P.2003 movement with 10 days of power reserve recalls the 1960’s when the brand had an eight-day power reserve watch whose movement was produced by Angelus. That watch feature a small seconds hand at 9:00. That longer power reserve made for less winding and, inherently, less wear and tear on the watches worn by the Navy commandos.
The new P.2003 is the first automatic caliber developed by Panerai in its “Laboratorio di Idee” (part of the brand’s R&D department) in the Neuchâtel, Switzerland, manufacture. The 296-part movement boasts 25 jewels and has a thickness of 8mm. Complete with free-sprung balance wheel, 28,800 vibrations per hour, three spring barrels and GMT function with 24-hour indicator, the watch offers rapid adjustment of local time. It is operated by an oscillating weight mounted on a ball bearing, which winds the springs of the barrels as it rotates in both directions.
The P.2003 caliber also boasts a seconds reset device to reset the seconds hand to zero, enabling the watch to be synchronized with a reference time signal. The operation of the system is unique in that when the winding crown is pulled out to the second position, a thin blade moves into contact with the balance wheel, stopping it. At the same time, a small hammer lever moves downwards and acts on a heart-shaped cam, which instantly moves the seconds hand to the zero position. As soon as the winding crown is returned to the normal position, the balance wheel is freed, the hammer lever is raised — releasing the cam –and the seconds hand resumes its normal course. The watch is outfitted with a KIF Parechoc® anti-shock device. It features a transparent sapphire case back for viewing the movement and is water resistant to 100 meters. It is sold with a dark blue alligator strap and a blue rubber strap.
According to Jean-Marc Pontroue’, CEO of Panerai, “In the new Luminor Dieci Giorni GMT, Panerai continues its legacy of technicity and innovation. With the advanced 10-day power reserve, we’re pushing the boundaries further, offering our clients a mix of enduring performance and Italian design,”
