Just a few days ago at their New York boutique Brielting unveiled its entry into the connected watch market with the Exospace B55. The new entry embraces technology and the future and also stays true to its Swiss roots. On hand for the event was former astronaut and brand ambassador Mark Kelly and Breitling Vice President Jean-Paul Girardin.
First things first, this is not a smart watch. This is not a device that will track your heartbeat, count your steps or determine how many calories you burned during your last workout. This is a piece that is designed for professionals — and given Breitling’s connection to aviation and racing, the chronograph is central to the connected watch’s functionality.
Using the friendliness of the user interface of the various smart watches on the market, Breitling has sought to enhance the functionality of the Exosoace. The phone application for the watch allows users to easily set time zones, alarms, displays and operating parameters, and night mode. Additionally, the watch can send excel friendly spreadsheets of recorded time that details different lap times, split times, etc. The watch can also display text messages, email alerts, appointment reminders and callers name and number for incoming phone calls. Unique to the watch is how it can help pilots record and keep track of information necessary for completing a flight log. Using the chronograph pushers, taxi time, flight time and time to gate can all be captured with the watch and then uploaded to the app for the user to email the pertinent data.
Powering the watch is a SuperQuatrz battery the boasts a two month battery when fully charged. It is charged via a magnetically linked cord and the SuoerQuartz movement is 10 times more accurate that traditional quartz movements. The case of the watch is done in titanium and features a rotating bezel. The face features hour, minute and second hands and also features two LCD digital displays used to show the various read outs of the connected piece. The LCD displays comes to life with either a push of the winding crown or a tilt of the wrist. The diameter is 46mm, but wears a lot smaller due to the curvature of the lugs. A strong consideration for pilots and professionals who routinely take advantage of their chronographs, the watch is real steal at $8,900.
