Easily one of the best-selling timepieces for German watch brand A. Lange & Sohne is the incredibly beautiful Saxonia Annual Calendar watch. Since it was first introduced to the world eight years ago in 2010, this model has been a benchmark in the realm of calendar watches thanks predominantly to its oversized date feature. Now, A. Lange & Sohne moves forward with three firsts for this watch: A US Boutique exclusive model that features the outsized date with white numerals on a gray background (never done in this color combo before) and with certain rotor parts plated in black rhodium. The end result: one of the most alluring color combinations ever for the Saxon Annual Calendar. Even better — it is reserved for the brand’s New York, Miami and Costa Mesa boutiques.
The problem with this watch, however, is that there are just 25 pieces being made. Even the price of $54,500 for this 18-karat white gold watch with slate gray dial is not daunting. In addition to the time, the watch offers date, month, day of the week and moon phase indications. The date must only be advanced once a year, when February transitions into March. Additionally, the moon phase display is accurate to 122.6 years before needing to be corrected by just one day.
This beauty is powered by the coveted in-house-made 476-part self-winding SAX-0-MAT calibre equipped with A. Lange & Sohne’s patented Zero-Reset function: when the crown is pulled, the movement stops and the second hand jumps to the zero position, making it easy to accurately set the time. The movement features a bi-directionally winding rotor in 21-karat gold with centrifugal mass made of platinum for added inertia. For this watch only, the rotor parts around the embossed A. Lange & Söhne logo are plated in black rhodium. Lastly, to achieve a golden hue, the black rhodium is finished with a circular graining for the first time ever. Thanks to a sapphire crystal caseback, one can easily view the meticulously finished movement complete with hand-engraved balance cock that makes each watch a unique piece of art.
Once again, A. Lange & Sohne lovers, I have to remind you of the worst part about this watch …. just 25 pieces are being made. So run, don’t walk to the computer, phone or boutique if you want this blue beauty. Oh, and by the way, women, this watch measures just 38.5mm in diameter — so it fits a small wrist magnificently.
