There is an entire sub-section of the watch industry that is frequently overlooked by the general public: the independent watch makers. For those in the know about watches – this sect offers some of the most exciting and ambitious timepieces thanks to their ability to think outside the box, to ditch red-tape that slows them down in pushing creativity forward, and to harness their passion. Generally these watchmakers are more receptive to new technology, materials and concepts.
One of the pioneers in the world of independent watch brands is Richard Mille, owner of the brand that bears his name. Since the brand’s inception, Mille has been creating timepieces that are on the cutting edge of watchmaking prowess – leading the way into new materials and three-dimensional watchmaking. He has wowed us with watches that celebrity-status sports stars such as Bubba Watson wear while they are playing.
This year, though, Mille focuses firmly on creating for women, and at the SIHH in January unveiled the avant-garde RM07-01 Ceramique – which will be making its way to stores right about now. Crafted in the very advanced ATZ white ceramic, the watch is powered by the in-house designed caliber CRMA2 — a highly skeletonized automatic movement specially made for this timepiece. It features a base plate and titanium bridges made from grade 5 titanium and an 18-karat rose gold rotor with variable geometry. This means that the rotor is able to adapt the rotational speed according to the wearer’s activity. The watch also features a new patented crown construction that renders it impossible to dislodge or break. The powerful architecture of the tonneau shaped case and the high-tech ceramic material is offset with a dial with a diamond-set center. In addition to white ATZ ceramic, the watch is also offered in a chocolate brown TZP ceramic.
