Easily one of the IWC Schaffhausen’s most beloved timepieces, the Portugieser Rattrapante has a long and storied past. The watch is one of the brand’s best sellers in the Portugieser line because of its ability to time two events simultaneously. Now, in honor of the opening of its first Toronto boutique, IWC releases the Portugieser Chronograph Rattrapante Edition Boutique Canada – raising the question: How desperate are you for an IWC Portugieser Rattrapante?
If you really want one of these beauties, and if you are a lover of all things Canadian – especially the incredible maple syrup – you may want this watch. The 40.9mm stainless steel piece with silver dial features black numbers and red chronograph hands. Turn it over, and the hand-wound watch is engraved with the Canadian maple leaf on it.
One of the nice things about this watch is that it also celebrates the 150th anniversary o the Canadian Foundation – which was formed in 1867 when the dominion of Canada came together with the British colonies of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Because it is the 150th anniversary, IWC will naturally be making just 150 pieces of this edition – and they will be for sale only in the Toronto IWC boutique. (Note: You can pre-order via phone, if you are desperate.)

As mentioned, in addition to the capabilities of a regular chronograph, the Rattrapante is a double chronograph with a split-seconds mechanism. To operate, the wearer pushes the button at 2:00 to start both hands (one on top of the other) in motion for timing an event. When the first event ends, the owner pushes the 10:00 pusher to stop the first hand. The second hand continues timing until the 2:00 button is pressed again at the end of the second event. The hands can be synchronized to start timing again by pushing the 10:00 button once more.
The mechanical chronograph movement, caliber 76240, beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers 44 hours of power reserve. The hand-wound movement also features minutes, seconds, small hacking seconds, split seconds for intermediate timing and stopwatch function of minutes and seconds. The watch is finished with a black alligator strap and is water resistant to 30 meters. The price of the watch is 14,300 Canadian dollars.
