Romain Gauthier is an independent watch brand that we respect immensely. Every single timepiece Romain Gauthier produces is done with strict attention to detail and with the finest master craftsmanship. Such is the case with the newest 18-karat white gold Insight Micro-Rotor watch now out in extremely limited editions with stunning enamel dials and specially finished movement with hard-frosted gilded manipulate and bridges. The new limited editions, each retailing for 79,000 Swiss francs, are being made in limited numbers of 10 each. The dials are offered in blue, black and white oven-fired enamel dials that are incredibly alluring. The watches feature a dial-side combination of gilded mainplate and palladium-treated bridges — offering a great mix of textures and finishes. It is these finishes and dial colors that make the newest pieces so special.
The movement of this automatic time-only watch was three years in the making and is one of the most visible views of a movement on the market. The focal point of the caliber is a 22-karat solid gold micro-rotor – visible on the dial side of the watch, as well as through the caseback. The micro-rotor is bi-directional and so motion from the wearer’s wrist converts to energy for the mainspring no matter which direction the micro-rotor turns. To achieve the bi-directional turning of the micro-rotor, Gauthier developed a highly complex reversing gear. The watch also boasts a double mainspring barrel to offer consistent power to the regulator and endowing it with 80 hours of power reserve. The Insight Micro-Rotor caliber consists of 206 individually hand-finished and hand assembled components, as well as 33 jewels, and beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour.
The new versions measure 39.5mm in diameter and each component is finely finished with a mix of straight-grained, linear plaquettes, circular-grained gears and ratchets featuring bevelled, circular spokes, and more. The case features the crown positioned at 2 o’clock to free up space for wrist movement; and the bombé sapphire crystal rises so its highest point when it is over the hour-minute display.
Impressions:
The combination of finishes on these new watches really make them a collector’s envy. Additionally, the enamel dials are so rich that they offer a mesmerizing depth to them. Of course, all of that combined with the Insight Micro-Rotor movement wraps up into an exquisite package that one would be hard-pressed to walk away from.
