Recently, we broke the news here of independent Swiss watch brand Armin Strom releasing an all-new watch that will represent the opening price point for the brand at $15,600 and that is a pretty intriguing work of art and technology. The new Gravity Equal Force watch is the start of an all-new collection for Armin Strom: System 78 (named for the birth year of each of its two co-founders).
At Dubai Watch Week we got to go hands on with the watch — in a myriad of wonderful new color ways, and we just had to showcase them. The architecture of this movement, the 202-part caliber ASB19 automatic winding movement with micro-rotor, is sensational. It is bold and highly three-dimensional — commanding the eye’s attention and not letting go. This is the second time that I have had an Armin Strom watch on my wrist and simply fallen in love. Giving it back was very difficult.
Modified Watchmaking in the Armin Strom Gravity Equal Force
In the Gravity Equal Force watch, with offset dial, Armin Strom has modified the traditional mainspring barrel, adding a stopwork declutch mechanism (that operates from within the mainspring barrel)that limits the torque send to the balance and creates smooth, consistent power delivery. This represents the first time a stop-works declutch mechanism has been added to an automatic winding movement.
In fact, the mechanism is quite complex and was developed entirely in house. You can read more about the caliber here. Equipped with a unidirectional winding micro rotor that is visible from the dial side, the 41mm watch offers 75 hours of power reserve.
It was inspired by a vintage pocket watch that Armin Strom was repairing for a customer. According to Claude Greisler, head watchmaker, the pocket watch architecture and interesting mechanism intrigued him. “We have reinvented the whole functionality of an automatic watch movement to bring another level of precision and to offer our collectors more assurance for reliable daily wear,” says Greisler.
The Gravity Equal Force watch will be on Armin Strom’s Configurator soon — enabling anyone to design his or her own color choices and more. That is an opportunity you won’t want to miss.
