Calling it the SUB 300T, Doxa 1889, announced last night at the New York Yacht Club that is has created a timepiece to honor maritime explorer and famed novelist Clive Cussler. Founder of the National Underwater and Marine Agency, Cussler authored more than 85 books about adventure, shipwrecks and more. The DOXA brand and its bold orange dial dive watch was spotlighted on the wrist of Cussler’s fictional hero, Dirk Pitt, who wore the watch on his epic quests. According to DOXA, this is what inspired the brand to recreate its SUB 300T watch in honor of Cussler.
The SUB 300T watch remains true to the dive collection’s key characteristics but has a decidedly distinct look. The 42mm aged stainless steel watch boasts a unique finish on the case and dive bezel that has a worn, weathered appeal –almost as though it traveled on the wrists of Cussler’s characters for decades or was submerged in water with a shipwreck. Even the steel bracelet has the same look to it.
The original dial has the same vintage-like look and features a compass in the center of the dial. It is created in a beige hue that recalls ancient pages of books and is meant to evoke a sense of adventure, mystery and discovery. The dial also pays homage to the author by featuring the 7, 15 and 31 on the date aperture of the dial in red – recalling his birthday of July 15, 1931. The dial also features Clive Cussler’s name beneath the SUB 300T name.
As would be expected from a man obsessed with finding shipwrecks and writing adventure novels, the watch boasts a unidirectional rotating bezel for calculating no-decompression dive times and a helium escape valve. It is powered by a Swiss mechanical automatic movement with 38 hours of power reserve.
The back of the watch is engraved with the names of shipwrecks and historical artifacts discovered or surveyed by the National Underwater Marine Agency (NUMA) – recalling the foundation Cussler created in 1979, as well as his love of words.
For the creation of this watch, DOXA worked closely with Cussler’s son Dirk and a percentage of the sales of the watch is being donated to NUMA. Thanks to creative packaging, the watch comes in a “book” box that can be placed on a bookshelf with its cover or spine showing. The watch retails for $2,690 and is water resistant to 4,000 feet.
Each watch is engraved on the side of the bezel with its number and each comes with an extra beige NATO strap. Customers also have the option of purchasing a black rubber strap with aged stainless steel coating on the buckle.
According to Dirk Cussler, the new watch honors his father’s originality and sense of adventure. “Bold. Creative. Adventurous. It was how my father approached life. Whether searching for historic shipwrecks or formulating tales of adventure, he was always original and always unique. Sentiments that are perfectly captured in this DOXA watch that bears his name.”
