The new Urwerk UR-105 M Dark Knight is crafted in titanium case and AITiN-treated steel bezel.
“An iron knight ready to conquer time.” That’s the way Urwerk is billing its new UR-105M—officially introduced to the world just a few minutes ago in Geneva. I was lucky to be among the first to see this watch a couple of months ago before its official launch. It is a piece inspired by the Middle Ages – the era of sword duels, knights in shining armor, lances and legends, and as such claims to embrace the valor of the era with a metal-clad case of titanium with steel armor screwed on top.
The watch takes inspiration from the medieval armor knights wore.
The bold yet gallant UR-105M holds true to the Urwerk DNA and codes of craftsmanship with satellite hours driven by bronze beryllium Geneva crosses that slowly orbit the dial along the minute scale. While each of the satellites is visible during it journey, a circular canopy made of PolyEtherEtherceton (PEEK) with openings displays the current hour. According to Urwerk co-founder Felix Baumgartner, “The aluminum and PEEK structure has to rotate with absolute chronometric precision. We needed the lightest materials to achieve a high level of precision and PEEK was ideal: The PEEK polymer is used in surgery because of its excellent mechanical properties and chemical resistance.”
The watch offers two synced seconds disks, one on the case side and one on the dial that moves in 10 second increments.
The watch also offers a honeycomb seconds disk that indicates each passing 10 seconds. This indicator is situated on the dial beneath the minute dial and is synchronized to another seconds indicator on the side of the case. The caseback offers the lateral power reserve indicator, the fine-tuning screw for adjusting the rate (but wearer’s are warned not to touch this themselves) and the brand’s signature Control Board, which displays the “oil change” indicator so the owner knows when it is time for servicing. The new UR-105M is available in two versions: ‘Iron Knight’ with a titanium case and steel bezel; ‘Dark Knight’ with a titanium case and AITiN-treated steel bezel. Sir, it’s time to don your armor.
