Armin Strom is a master at resonance, as well as at skeletonization. These two things come together beautifully in the Gravity Equal Force watch the brand first released in stainless steel last fall. Now, it brings this horological masterpiece to the forefront in 18-karat rose gold. Giving it a sophisticated appeal, Armin Strom finishes the intriguing watch with a black alligator strap that matches the black dial set against a blackened main plate.
We got to go hands on with the ncredible Gravity Equal Force during the Dubai Watch Week late last year, and can vouch for the uniqueness of this watch. It takes the traditional mainspring barrel and adds a stop-work de-clutch mechanism with automatic winding to create consistent power delivery to the balance. This version marks the second launch in the brand’s fairly new System 78 Collection of innovative watch advancements at a competitive price. In fact, the watch retails for $26,600.
How the Armin Strom Stop-Works De-Clutch System Works
By transmitting equal force to the balance, it increases the consistency of the watch’s rate. The stop-works de-clutch system that Armin Strom developed operates inside the mainspring barrel and limits the torque delivered to the balance, ensuring smooth power delivery. This represents the first time a stop-works de-clutch mechanism has been added to an automatic winding movement.
Armin Strom’s Claude Greisler was inspired to create this system the a pocket watch came in for repair from a collector. It contained a motor barrel design that had clear advantages over the standard going barrel. Inspired, Armin Strom’s watchmakers designed a barrel that drives the going train via the barrel arbor and winding the barrel housing at the same time. This improves functionality and reduces wear because it offers low-friction rotation for the mainspring. Armin Strom has created a great video about the concept of this watch — essentially, a video about resonance.
With numerous small improvements to the going train and winding mechanism, the new Caliber ASB19 is the result of top-notch in-house research and design in the field of advanced horological technology. In addition to the gold case, the new Gravity Equal Force differs from previous models thanks to a new off-center dial and slimmer case with a smaller 41mm diameter. The highlight of the watch is now the triplet of bridges echoing the pocket watch inspiration behind the ASB19. Essentially, the idea behind this watch was to update the aesthetic design and to create value pricing for top horological advancements.
