At the Watches & Wonders Shanghai watch exhibition, that took place from September 9-13, German watch brand A. Lange & Söhne released three new watches in its proprietary Honey Gold that celebrate 175 years of watchmaking history: the F. A. Lange series. We wrote about these watches last week on Forbes, but now we can expound on them for our Lange-loving readers.
In its Homage to F.A. Lange series, the brand releases two new 1815 collection watches as limited editions and a new Turbograph Perpetual watch — all honoring Ferdinand Adolph Lange who established his manufacture in the Saxony region of Germany in 1845. The series also marks the 30th anniversary of the re-establishment of the brand after the reunification of Germany. The three Homage to F.A. Lange 2020 anniversary watches are the 1815 Thin Honey Gold, the 1815 Rattrapante Honey Gold (1815 commemorates the year F.A. Lange was born), and the Turbograph Perpetual Honey Gold – all in limited editions.
A Lange & Sohne 1815 Rattrapante Honey Gold
This stunning new 41.2mm Honey Gold watch brings a host of firsts to the forefront, including a new color combination and a new movement. Cased in the brand’s proprietary Honey Gold that has exceptional hardness and warmer sheen than yellow gold, the new watch boasts black dial (made of solid silver).
This watch represents the sixth time A. Lange & Sohne has unveiled a split-seconds chronograph that allows for timing of multiple events at once. The highly complicated movement, L101.2, is entirely new and features the Rattrapante (catch-up) mechanism on the movement side of the manually wound caliber. Via a transparent sapphire case back, the wearer can view the switching process of the mechanism when the sweep-seconds hand is stopped independently of the chronograph hand, and the re-synchronization of the hands. It is a mesmerizing feature.
The 365-part movement is specially finished for this Homage collection. Just 100 of the 1815 Rattrapante Honey Gold Homage watch will be made, each retailing for $134,100.
A. Lange & Sohne Turbograph Perpetual Honey Gold
Easily the most complicated of the three watches being released in the Homage series is the Tourbograph Perpetual Honey Gold watch – that pushes the creative envelope. This striking watch is one of the brand’s most complicated watches ever bult. The first version was released in 2017 (Tourbograph Perpetual Pour La Merite) and boasts five complications. This new version, created in Honey Gold with a black rhodium plated dial – boasts those five horological feats in a harmonious layout on the striking gray-hued dial.
The tourbillon and the fusee’ and chain transmission are all about increasing the accuracy of the watch, while the perpetual calendar with moonphase indication and chronograph Rattrapante are highly coveted functions. They are all part of the L133.1 Tourbograph Perpetual movement with calendar module built around the tourbillon escapement (that compensates for errors in time keeping due to the effects of gravity on the watch when it is in certain positions).
The movement is comprised of a massive 684 parts with the chain (of the chain-and-fusee transmission) counted as one part. However, that chain consists of another 636 miniscule parts. There are also 52 jewels in the movement, including two diamond end stones. In all, it is a masterful feat of horology that takes hundreds of hours to build and assemble. This special edition boasts a meticulous finish on the movement parts, including a granular textured finish on the bridges. Just 50 pieces will be made (with price released only on request).
A Lange & Sohne 1815 Thin Honey Gold
The final watch in the homage series is an ultra-thin watch. With a diameter of 38mm, the elegant two-hand watch measures just 6.3mm in height – the height of a few letter envelopes stacked. The hand-made enamel dial of this watch boasts a railway track minute scale and Arabic numerals that recall the pocket watches created by Lange more than a century and a half ago. Just 175 pieces of this watch will be made, each retailing for $34,400.
