While the official 30-year anniversary of A. Lange & Sohne’s Lange 1 was in October of 2024, the brand continues to celebrate the much-loved timepiece – and rightfully so. The timeless, minimalistic yet profoundly sophisticated design has captivated collectors and enthusiasts worldwide, cementing its place as an icon in fine watchmaking. With each milestone release, the Lange 1 reinforces its legacy, proving that great design endures.

The Lange 1 is arguably the brand’s most famous and best-selling collection. A retrospective of its three-decade journey reveals a series of remarkable developments, all brought to life while maintaining the core design elements that defined its debut on October 24, 1994.

I remember that moment well, as I had already been covering watches for nearly a decade and was present for the brand’s relaunch. The very first Lange 1 boasted (and still does) an off-center dial, an off-center subsidiary seconds display, and a distinctive double-window outsized date—inspired by a clock in a Saxony theater. This fusion of clean, timeless aesthetics with functional sophistication underscored a defining trait of German watchmaking: harmony.

The off-center dial and signature double-window date display have remained hallmarks of the Lange 1. The now-iconic date aperture, inspired by the five-minute clock in the Dresden Semper Opera House, is approximately three times larger than conventional date displays thanks to the spaced dedicated to each numeral individually, enhancing legibility. Achieving this required  a complex and elaborate interplay of cams and detents, a technical feat developed entirely in-house.

Since that first model, the Lange 1 collection has seen numerous milestones, each driven by the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship and innovation. Despite the evolution of movements and added complications, the Lange 1’s fundamental design and signature appearance has remained virtually unchanged, save for subtle refinements, new colorways, and material variations.

The movements within the Lange 1 watches have naturally evolved as the brand has grown. Some models feature self-winding Manufacture calibers, while others retain manually wound in-house movements. Today, the Lange 1 family includes approximately ten variations, some enriched with complications such as a tourbillon, perpetual calendar, moonphase display, or second time zone.

Yet, through all these advancements, the Lange 1 has upheld a remarkable consistency in aesthetics, execution and commitment to details. Among the notable milestones was the 2000 launch of the Lange 1 Moon Phase watch that incorporated the complication for the first time into this line,  followed in 2003 by the Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase Luna Mundi. Another significant release came in 2005 with the Lange 1 Timezone, featuring a world-time display peripherally on the dial for  perfect visual harmony.

Among other historical pieces of note: the  Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar  that stole hearts when it was unveiled in 2021 in white and pink gold, and then in 2023 in platinum. The Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar watch seamlessly integrates the complication into the dial thanks to a peripheral month ring – offering clean and classic looks. Additionally, the power reserve indicator, placed opposite the hours/minutes dial offers exquisite balance.

This model also introduced a stunning two-level moonphase display, with a celestial blue sky for daytime and a deep starry blue for night, serving as an elegant day/night indicator. The timepiece is powered by the automatic manufacture Caliber L021.3, which incorporates a newly developed winding system, further showcasing A. Lange & Sohne’s technical prowess.

This collection accompanied the new 2024 anniversary editions: four limited-edition pieces, including two Lange 1 models—one in 950 platinum with a striking black onyx dial (a first for the collection) and another in 750 pink gold with a blue 925 silver dial—alongside two Little Lange 1 limited-edition versions.
