Easily one of the most distinguished cigar makers in the world, Cuban brand Cohiba celebrates its 55th anniversary this year. To help the celebration along, Swiss watch brand Zenith, which is enjoying its fifth year of collaboration with Habanos, unveils its sixth special edition watch: the commemorative Chronomaster Open Cohiba 55th Anniversary.
Timed to coordinate with Habanos World Days, a three-day digital version of the famed Habanos Festival, Zenith joins Cohiba for virtual tours of the cigar factories, themed conversations about the precision of cigar making and watch making and for the Habanos World challenge. The new Chronomaster Open watch that is being released , recalls the design codes of the Cohiba packaging, as well as the paper bands that are put onto the exquisite hand-rolled cigars.
The dial of the watch is saffron yellow with a black and white checkered motif making an appearance. the yellow chronograph seconds hand features a star-shaped counterweight, and a black alligator strap completes the look. Well, almost. The look isn’t really complete until a cigar is in hand – even if just for show and not for smoking.
The 42mm stainless steel watch is powered by Zenith’s signature El Primero automatic column-wheel chronograph movement. An aperture reveals the beating of the balance wheel, with a frequency of 36000 vibrations per hour (5 Hz). The El Primero 4061 automatic caliber is equipped with a silicon escape-wheel and lever and is a COSC certified chronometer that offers 50 hours of power reserve.
Unfortunately, just 55 pieces of the Chronomaster Open Cohiba 55th anniversary watch will be made. Each features a special display on the case back with the Cohiba 55 logo printed on the inside of the sapphire crystal. The watch is sold with a set of five special Cohiba cigars packaged in a co-branded porcelain collector jar. It will be available this fall at Zenith boutiques and retails for approximately $9,900.
