Two years ago, in 2021, TAG Heuer and Porsche embarked on a global collaboration to honor the illustrious history of the iconic Carrera. TAG Heuer introduced the Carrera watch, originally conceived and crafted by Jack Heuer in 1963 during the exhilarating era of the Carrera Panamericana races, while Porsche showcased its legendary Porsche 911. Now, TAG Heuer presents its latest co-creation, the Carrera Chronosprint x Porsche, in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the TAG Heuer Carrera collection and the Porsche 911.
Today, we take a closer look at the watches. Dedicated to precision, aesthetics, and speed, these new timepieces come in two versions, one in stainless steel and the other in gold, both driven by an entirely new movement known as TH20-08. An evolution of the brand’s in-house caliber TH20, which made its debut earlier in the year, this innovative caliber features a central seconds hand that exhibits rapid acceleration and deceleration over a 60-second interval. This dynamic performance is made possible by two snail-shaped wheels meticulously engineered for deceleration. With a robust 42mm chronograph design, these watches are also water-resistant up to 100 meters.
The dials of these timepieces showcase distinctive red lines on the flange, denoting 0 to 100 kilometers per hour, with the seconds hand achieving this feat in a mere 9.1 seconds, mirroring the swift acceleration of the initial Porsche 911 cars. This motion infuses a sense of drama into the watch. At the 6 o’clock position, a subsidiary dial pays homage to the 1970s Porsche dashboard, featuring red lines in the 50-60-kilometer range. Meanwhile, the subsidiary dial at 9 o’clock recalls a gauge, with its red section serving as a reminder of the engine’s limit. In this instance, the red line is set at 6.8 hours, signifying the 6,800 revolutions per minute limit of the movement.
These remarkable watches come equipped with a double glassbox crystal that provides a clear view of the dial, along with a crystal case back designed to showcase the movement, featuring a specially crafted mass reminiscent of the three-spoke steering wheel found in Porsche vehicles. Both timepieces are accompanied by calfskin leather straps bearing an embossed “911” motif. The steel version boasts a silver dial and flange, complemented by a black strap, while the gold version features a beige dial and flange, coupled with a brown strap. TAG Heuer has priced the steel version at 9,000 CHF and the gold version at 23,000 CHF.
Frédéric Arnault, CEO of TAG Heuer, remarked, “This watch perfectly encapsulates the essence of the motorsport universe and our partnership with Porsche. We have seamlessly merged the heritage of the 911 and the TAG Heuer Carrera, leveraging cutting-edge technology and unique design. It is a testament to our shared values of precision, innovation, and a deep appreciation for our respective histories.”
