Recently, at WatchTime New York 2024, I got to go hands-on with the absolutely stunning new Armin Strom Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition watch, and the design, technology and mechanics of this watch was inspiring. It shouldn’t have come as a surprise to me, given the fine finishings and mechanics on all Armin Strom watches, but this piece, with its symmetric dials and highly wearable 39mm case, made its mark.
The Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition watch was released in celebration of the 15th anniversary of the independent brand’s fully integrated Manufacture, and represents a new chapter in its horological journey. Housed in a 39mm 18-karat white gold case, this timepiece reimagines one of the brand’s most defining innovations—the resonance complication—bringing it into the world of dual time zones in a striking and complex masterpiece.
Created in a limited edition of just 25 pieces, each retailing for $120,700, the Armin Strom Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition boasts a distinct approach to the resonance phenomenon using the brand’s in-house developed system that offers superior resilience and performance. For this First Edition, the brand deftly blends its iconic dual-time concept with its proprietary Resonance system – adding a bold touch of color and exposing movement components for mesmerizing appeal.
The visual harmony of the Dual Time GMT Resonance is immediately apparent with its two symmetrical dials, each dedicated to a different time zone. The balanced design is emphasized by the sky-blue dials with a grenage finish, surrounded by black azure chapter rings. These twin dials are a signature of Armin Strom’s resonance timepieces, and here they are paired with day/night indicators and two independent crowns—one at 4:00 and the other at 8:00.
The duality of the watch extends beyond the dial and crowns to the movement itself, where two independent movements power the twin time zones. Unlike many dual time watches that limit independence to the hour setting, Armin Strom allows for full control of both hours and minutes on each dial. This level of autonomy makes the Dual Time GMT Resonance highly practical for those who need to track time across different regions or adjust to irregular time zones.
In the Dual Time GMT Resonance, two balance wheels operate in resonance, synchronizing through the brand’s patented clutch spring. This “science of movement,” as Armin Strom likes to call it, enhances the stability of the timekeeping by counteracting external disruptions, such as wrist movement and gravitational forces.
Armin Strom Resonance Movement Caliber ARF22
At the core of the Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition is the brand’s new caliber ARF22. This manually wound movement, designed and produced in-house, marks Armin Strom’s 18th caliber. It’s a testament to the brand’s dedication to creating innovative and precise movements from the ground up.
The manual winding Caliber ARF22, with 231 components, features two independent gear trains that drive each time display. The power reserve of 42 hours is supported by two mainspring barrels, ensuring that the watch remains reliable and functional over extended periods. The caseback reveals the symmetrical architecture of the movement, providing a glimpse into the technical marvel that powers this timepiece.
True to Armin Strom’s emphasis on artisanal craftsmanship, the Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition is adorned with exquisite hand-finished details. The sky-blue dials feature a subtle grenage texture, which contrasts beautifully with the polished rhodium-plated hands and indexes.
Complementing the design are two strap options: a matte-gray alligator strap with sky-blue stitching and a light-gray alligator strap with pearl-gray stitching. Both straps are secured with an 18-karat white gold pin buckle, enhancing the luxurious feel of the watch.
