No matter if you’ve been there before or never been – traveling to Washington DC is always a thrill. It exudes a deep sense of pride and is filled with culture and history. What’s more, it’s a super clean, green city to visit. Recently, we traveled there to experience one of the finest boutique hotels in the city (The Jefferson, Washington DC), superb restaurants and the sites. So, what are the 5 Must Sees in DC?
The Washington Monument. Even though the monument is currently closed and scaffolded during restorations to repair damage incurred by the earthquake a few years ago, it is still a sight to be seen – especially from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial with the Reflection Pool in front.
The Lincoln Memorial. Truly a great tribute to American history. The steps of the Memorial alone are beautiful as they lead to the massive columns and the cavernous room within. There sits one of the most beautifully chiseled and sculpted works of art in the form of Lincoln himself. The walls are filled with Lincoln’s words – from the Gettysburg Address to the Second Inaugural Address.
The National World War II Memorial. From the Atlantic side to the Pacific side, 56 great pillars flank beautiful center fountains. Each pillar holds the name of the states and territories of the USA that partook in World War II. On each side are domed triumph arches with soaring Eagle sculptures.
The Newseum. A 250,000 square foot museum that is at once overwhelming yet incredibly informative, each of the seven floors of the Newseum is filled with interactive exhibits and with historic moments – including headlines from newspapers across the country that reflect great events such as the Civil War and the national coverage of September 11.
Visit Mount Vernon. Take a break from the city and make an excursion to the estate – all 500 acres of it – of George Washington. A tour of the 14-room mansion is well worth the trip, but give yourself plenty of time to visit the smokehouse, the kitchen and the slave quarters.
